Noli Me Tangere: Chapters 1-3

I’m working on a Noli Me Tangere project this summer and I’m trying to simplify it for a student. I’ve done this last school year, kaya lang hindi ko naman sinave! Boo! So para hindi na mawala, I’m going to share each chapter here.

First three chapters muna ha! Click this to view/download the first three chapters of Noli Me Tangere: Noli 1-3

You’ll notice that there are blank lines on after paragraphs, I really put those so the student will have space for their notes. Pwede ring dyan mag-FLAMES. The watermark is there nga pala for very practical reasons–para sumikat! Hahahaha. Jusko pag palpak yung summary ko madali akong mahanap.

You may drop comments or even send me an email (dyosaimma@gmail.com) for questions or your problems about my summary.

BTW I based my summary on Vibal Publishing House’s simplified Noli Me Tangere.

Terrific Tuesday. (Shoot me if I post a “Wow Wednesday” entry tomorrow, okay?)

First day back at work after the longest weekend of 2012 and things were… sabaw.

Four things:

1) We had lunch at Banapple in Il Terrazo in Tomas Morato today and the staff completely forgot about my order. Sad face. Ayaw ko talagang magalit kasi Banapple is Banapple and I love it, no matter what. So I took the high road! I just asked for a feedback form and for their manager so I could talk to her. Burp.

2) The kuya in Gong Cha in SM North EDSA made me extra giddy! I forgot that I was having a migraine attack for a while because…

…he spelled my name right. Hahahaha. HAHAHAHA. Award.

3) Today is goodbye blackheads sa ilong day! I tried Skin Food’s Egg White Nose Pack.

It’s a lot cheaper than the nose strips available in Etude House but I like it more. When I used the Etude House blackhead strip, my blackheads were gone but my nose turned a shade lighter than the rest of my face and the blackheads were back after two days. Skin Food’s Egg White Nose Pack is supposed to be a “cooling down” strip so you’d have to put it on after pricking your nose. I don’t really know if there’s a good way to prick but the egg white nose pack was calming enough to close my pores. Egg white is supposed to tighten your skin anyway, so I guess the egg white nose pack works for me.

4) I’m a sale junkie and I score good deals because I’m always inside a mall. Wala, nakasanayan lang siguro? QueSci is at the back of SM North EDSA at ang pinakamadaling way papuntang UP para sa akin noon by commute ay dadaan ng SM North, hence the sale jackpots. I’ve been wanting to try to paint for months, so when I saw this today, I knew right then and there that I had to buy it:

Pag regular price, it costs P350. Pwede na diba? I always see patterns of animals and it’s not that I don’t like cute dogs, but I just want to work on something more exciting. May maliit na punit yung packaging and I asked the Fully Booked staff if they had stocks of this pattern, since may punit nya yung box. Since wala na silang nahanap, they just gave this one to me at 15% off. Punit ng box equals 15% discount. Thank you, Fully Booked. I will remember to give you a painting when I become an artist. Jusko kelan kaya yun. Hahaha.

I Heard a Great Man Speak Yesterday

Yesterday, I was one of the lucky few who heard a great man speak. I’d like to think that he’s great for he has a legion of people following him–he raves about Apple and people save up for a MacBook; he shows the first ten minutes of Three Idiots and people start dividing the movie in chapters and discuss it in small groups for weeks. Without meaning harm or sarcasm, I’d like to think that this man is a great one.

So there I was yesterday, trying my best to listen to what this great man had to say to adolescents waving goodbye to the simple, grade school life and I was so stunned when he started talking about how the schools that we have now don’t offer anything for the brilliant minds that we have. I heard him speak a year ago at the same event and he sort of said the same things.

I felt really sad for this great man. Why? He said that people from UP only end up as domestic helpers–and UP is the best school in the country. What’s wrong with being a domestic helper? It is a decent job and it’s way better than stealing or scheming just so one can earn money. Besides, most people from UP get decent jobs here in the Philippines. Ugh. He also said that no other school offers real education but the one that he built. This great man that I’m talking about came from Ateneo, by the way. I felt so sorry for him because he has so little belief with the things that we have. Yes, UP is not the most beautiful school in Manila and the National University of Singapore will dwarf the newly constructed physics and law buildings in UP, or even Ateneo for that matter, but is it really necessary to say these sort of things to a graduating class?

There were speakers before this great man and they all told inspiring stories about people from UP and they challenged the graduates to do the same–to work hard, get into a good university and start building their dreams around their beliefs and wit. Maybe this is the reason why I just can’t let this one effing go is because the least that the great man can do is to just not say anything because his solutions aren’t effective either. He built a school for the brilliant young kids that he believes in but it will take years before they can all master the formula of running a school. And besides, it’s too early to claim anything. It is unwise to count the eggs when a hen is still a chick. Heck you need to wait for a chick to grow up first and become a hen, then you’d have to wait for it to actually lay eggs before you start counting.

By the time that this great man was done bashing UP (and other universities that he referred to as the lower institutions of learning), I’ve zoned out already. The red brick in Unblock Me deserved my attention more than this man who’s so great that he thinks he’s bold enough to brand people whom he hasn’t met yet.

I went home thinking about all the things that this great man said. I have built a career from helping students from his school, helping students to understand a lesson more. I have twenty eight students from the great man’s school and all of them are brilliant. Most of our sessions are just about me explaining the things that their teachers skipped in school. I also handle kids who are a bit slower than others, but they’re brilliant nonetheless. Most of them (if not all) dream of going into a huge university one day. I know my students will make it big someday, whatever path they may choose. They will be big and they will dream more. Note that in my previous sentence, I used the future tense because it’s too early to claim. Hope is the right word–not claim.

Papa would laugh if I’d call him a great man, but I think he speaks like one. And the great man whom I heard talk yesterday didn’t sound like him at all. I wonder why.

Tuck in na! Yes!!

I will forever remember this day as “the day I went to work with my blouse tucked in”. Only thin people could get away with that!! Hahahaha. Pwede naman pala mag-tuck in ang chubby eh. (Chubby daw o.)

Anyway, I think I just need to scout more tops and shorts that I could wear tucked in. I think it’s just a matter of choosing well. HAHA! I’m sort of getting there. Wheeee!

Next target: Solenn Heussaff themed clothes. You know, yung mga kita yung singit na makinis. Grabe.

How I Combat Work-at-Home-Related Stress

The theme of my Tuesday afternoon is to stay at home to finish a loooooot of work. I’d like to think that I’m living up to the literal definition of what a “young professional” is.

I like working at home–it has more pros than cons. The only con is that yeah, it sucks that I have to bring my work at home, but come to think of it, I don’t have to pick an outfit or drive to the office or even buy food. It’s actually cheaper to work in the house, and if only I’d find a way to still get paid while I’m sitting on my bed… Oh well.

With 50% of my work done, I decided to pause for a short break so I could play in the kitchen. It was time for me to play. Here’s what happened:

  1. I grabbed a can of corned beef, chopped some onions and garlic and sauteed the beef. Too bad I couldn’t find mushrooms though.
  2. I got some rice and an egg and tossed it in the same pan that I used to cook the corned beef. The oil from the corned beef is the secret ingredient for happiness. Basil won’t hurt BTW.
  3. When the egg was thoroughly mixed with the rice, I got a bowl and transferred the goodness of what I’d like to call as corned beef rice meal in it.
  4. I got a spoon and a glass of iced tea. Chow time!

Some people need to do a lot of things to get rid of the stress that they get from their work. I guess it’s a good thing that I only need food.

To cut corners, I got myself a…

…new toy!!

Wheeee! I got myself (again) one of those printers that you’d see in internet cafes. I don’t really consider this one as a legit move so I’d be closer to my dream business, which is an artsy-fartsy print shop. Dream nga eh, edi dapat highest level diba. Anyway, I spend a lot on inks so I figured, might as well buy this type of printer. The warranty for the unit is void already though, kasi kakahuyin ng technician yan to have the CIS (continuous ink system) installed. I’m also not after really gorgeous prints kasi puro documents lang naman ang ipiprint ko mostly–worksheets, handouts and the like. I’ll be working with my own program/flow of lessons this summer at masarap gumawa ng worksheets pag maraming ink! (I’m so sorry my dear students, but you’ll thank me one day for this. Tough love, baby.)

I’m thinking about putting a sign outside our house that says, “PRINTING STARTS AT P3.00 PER PAGE.” Oha oha. If I can print 100 pages at P3 each, bawi ko na yung P3000 na ginastos ko for my toy.

Oh well. Moolah, moolah, where are you? I promise I won’t let you go that easily next time.

It’s Moving Up Day in Brick’s Place!

We had our students’ moving up ceremony today:

From left (first row): Francine, Lia, Coby, Iyuri and Enzo. Second row: Me and Teacher Och.

Our students got their awards and we played games with their parents too. It was fun, seeing the mommies and the daddies passing balls around to get a prize for their child. It was my first time to attend a moving up ceremony as a teacher, and it felt good. Tomorrow, I’ll attend my first parent-teacher conference as a teacher. I don’t know what to expect! Hahaha. If all else fails, chikahin ang parents. Chos.

I like how my new job makes my life “more exciting”.

BTW, the Brick’s Place Learner’s Circle is at 123 Don A. Roces Avenue, QC. Just turn right when you reach the first stop light in Tomas Morato, the one near McDonald’s and Goldilock’s. We’re on the 2nd floor os M&J Building, you’ll see our golden yellow sign on the side of the road. (It’s very hard to miss!) Drop by anytime to check out what we have for the kids. Sa Brick’s, masarap maging bata. Bongga yung play room!

It’s class picture day!

Meet the Ate Imma Kids Batch 2011-2012:

Grade two represent! From left: Rod John, EJ, Patricia, Kirsten, Brandon and Prince. They have their “school is over” smiles.

I asked them to do a jump shot. Puro fail.

Grade three! We had to have two pictures because Ava had to leave early for another class and Jian came in late. Yan, ang daming pictures ni Jeorge!

With Jeorge and Jian:

Grade five students, represent! From left (seated): Jared, Khervin and Hymn. Abi is the girl beside me na ayaw mag-smile. Dibale, di na nya kailangang mag-smile, cute na sya.

Samantha, a grade five student, came in late. From left (seated): RX and Stefano. Second row, from left: Khervin, Abi, Sam and Jared. All smiles, yes!

RX and Stefano are both in grade six. These two are the sweetest boys evaaaaar:

Sabi ko sa kanila, dapat matakpan yung braso ko. Ayan! Hahahaha. Thank you, RX and Stef!

Next batch: grade seven boys! Ayaw pumayag nung iba, masusungit. Anyway, keri lang. I’m with Rafael, Paolo and Jira here:

Lahat ng grade seven boys ko mas malalaki na sa akin, kaya pinilit kong nakaupo kaming lahat. Crop na lang yung tyan. O diba, lahat sila pogi?

At syempre, hindi mawawala ang high school kiddos:

From left (seated): Joanna, me and Jessie. Second row, from left: Tom, Daniel, Samuel and Andrei.

It’s a bit hard for me to think of another place where I could possibly be, actually. I also don’t know when I’ll be seeing all of them, or for some, I don’t know if I’ll see them again. But I’m fine with that because seeing and working with these kids’ smiles has been the coolest thing about my job. Hihi.

It’s also good na halos lahat ng alaga ko may “ZOMG school is over!” smiles on their faces. Refreshing.

Lessons I learned on a very free day Friday

I ended up having an impromptu late lunch date with Ava. I was so busy these past few days kaya ngayong pang normal na tao na ang sched ko, yung mga biglaang free time, sobrang kinatutuwa ko na. Hihi.

Today, I learned that…

1) KFC invents a new meal every six months or so for the adults.

Ava asked me to get her a chicken meal and she also asked if we can get a large mashed potato for her Kuya Bono. (How do you say no to that?) I tried KFC’s latest offering, the chicken and bacon pasta. With cheese. Ah basta mahaba name nya tapos may chicken, cheese at bacon bits. Honest naman yung meal, the chicken chunks were big enough and there were a lot of bacon strips! For P90, it’s amazing.

2) It’s best to eat Magnum with a kid.

Magnum costs P50 per bar, which is really steep for an ice cream bar with a wooden handle, but I’d have to say that it’s good. Masarap, pero hindi mo hahanap-hanapin. After our late lunch, I promised Ava that we’d get ice cream. I asked her if she already knows what Magnum is, so nung sinabi nyang wala syang clue, I told her that that’s the ice cream that we’re going to get. She was curious what Magnum is all about pero feeling ko excited lang siguro talaga syang kumain ng ice cream. By the time she ate one-third of her bar (she got the truffle bar), her cheeks were covered with chocolate. ANG CUTE! It was alarming to see half of Ava’s face covered with ice cream, but I figured, yun ang kapalit ng P100! There are things in this world that only kids can get away with and more often than not, they will end up making you really happy with the little things that they didn’t really intend to do. Mahal ang Magnum para sa ice cream that you can buy in convenience stores, magsama ka na lang ng bata para fun! Wheeee.

3) There is nothing wrong with shopping for books because all imported books in National Book Store are marked at 20% off from March 16 until April 15. I couldn’t believe it at first, so I picked these books up, went to the cashier and saw that their prices were indeed marked down:

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!! I just had to have my own copy. I sing this every day with the kids in my toddler class. Before I started with my toddler class, I didn’t know that this song existed. I missed quite a lot pala! Hihi. It’s about letter climbing up a coconut tree. (Regular price is P359.)

Cath Kidston’s in Print — I love how youthful Cath Kidston’s works make me feel. Plus I’m going to try more artsy fartsy stuff this summer, so I need this book for inspiration. Wheeee! (Regular price is P395.)

Ji Baek’s Rescue Your Nails — I have a weakness for books with colorful pages. I can’t really afford most of them, that’s why the feeling is so magical whenever I stumble upon a good book, one that I know I will use, on a sale. Well mura lang din naman ‘tong book na ‘to, to begin with. (Regular price is P145. Mwahahaha. Tapos may sale pa.)

Who says lessons have to be deep? They can also be fun. Hihi.

The perks of being a teacher

There is always cuteness overload in the classroom. (Or at least sa room namin.)

Kids are always game for anything that involves kulitan.

There are unlimited smiles.

You’ll get a hug everyday, guaranteed!

At syempre, pag wala silang pasok, ikaw rin wala. Hihihihi.

I love biglaang holidays. I can’t believe that I spent half of my day with my back glued to the bed. It was a good move that I bought a new router last night so I was still able to do some things that I needed to (pay bills online huhu). I enjoyed my biglaan holiday, though I know that the reason behind the strike that caused my “holiday” is a huge issue. Sana ibigay ang tama.

Anyway, tomorrow is a brand new day! Let’s hope for better things to happen.
